The MDP works at the Zambia Sugar plantation,
which is a property of Illovo Sugar Limited, where there
are 7,500 employees on the estate, supporting a population
of 25,000. They will also recruit participants both from
the sugar estate and from outside in the local town of
Mazabuka. Women of reproductive age attending clinics on
the sugar estate will be invited to participate in the
trial.
There was little in the way of HIV services before the
MDP began Voluntary Testing and Counselling (VCT). An old
dilapidated building which had been used as an engineering
department near one of the clinics run by Illovo Sugar
was completely renovated to house the MDP clinic and VCT
centre, as well as MDP Offices.
The Principal Investigator is
Dr Maureen Chisembele,
who is based in the Department of Obstetrics &
Gynaecology at the University Teaching Hospital, Lusaka.
