The MDP currently works
in two districts: Tongaat and Verulam. The Tongaat Clinic
was established
at the Haven of Rest, but to address space requirements
subsequently relocated to the Tongaat Child and Family
Welfare premises, approximately 4km’s away. Both
sites are semi-urban.
The current clinics are primary health care facilities
and the target population is women attending for family
planning and post-natal care. The clinics serve a population
of about 500,000.
The Principal Investigator is Professor Gita Ramjee, who is the
director of the HIV Prevention Unit in Durban.
