The ISAG is the body responsible for reviewing and advising on overall scientific strategy for the MDP and other key scientific issues, and meets on an annual basis or more frequently if indicated. Representatives of other major initiatives in microbicide development are represented to ensure that the MDP is complementary to these other initiatives. The funders (DFID/MRC) are invited to attend as observers/ex-officio together with other relevant agencies such as WHO/UNAIDS, as appropriate.
The ISAG advises the PMB on the strategic direction of the MDP and recommends changes to take account of other microbicide initiatives or developments in the field. The ISAG’s responsibilities include:
- annual review of the overall strategy of the MDP and the progress of the MDP towards its goals.
- reviewing relevant information from other sources (e.g. other related microbicide and HIV prevention initiatives) and, in the light of these, suggesting any changes to the MDP.
- overseeing all trials conducted by the MDP at least once a year by the attendance of the Chair, co-Chair and other members of ISAG (those with clinical expertise) as appropriate at a formal Trial Steering Committee meeting to assess the progress of each trial (the ISAG Chair will chair such meetings).
- representation, by attendance of the Chair or co-chair, at PLG or PMB meetings if required.
